If your baby has a suspected spina bifida diagnosis, you will undergo a variety of assessments and tests to determine the nature and severity of the spina bifida defect, and to help determine the spina bifida treatment that's right for you and your baby.
At Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment, you’ll undergo a comprehensive one-day evaluation. Diagnostic testing for spina bifida will include a fetal ultrasound, a fetal MRI and a fetal echocardiogram. The team will assess your baby's condition and carefully evaluate the mother as well.
Once we have a complete picture of your baby’s diagnosis, our multidisciplinary team will meet with families to discuss treatment options. For babies with a myelomeningocele diagnosis, treatment options include fetal surgery, which has changed the historical course of spina bifida treatment and the long-term outcomes. Learning your options after diagnosis is critical so you can receive the best care possible for you and your unborn child.
