The Campbell Police Department takes pride in keeping our city safe. While we do all we can to identify suspects after the fact, we’d like to offer some helpful tips to prevent car break-ins. We have included a link to a recent surveillance video showing suspects looking for valuables in an unlocked vehicle after bypassing a locked one.
Although it seems obvious, lock your car doors and make sure your windows and sunroof (if you have one) are closed all the way - even if you are leaving your car for only a few minutes. As seen in the video, experienced thieves move quickly and it doesn’t take long to enter your vehicle and take what they want. Sometimes a locked door is all it takes to deter a potential thief.
While parking in a private or monitored garage is an ideal situation, it is not always possible. When parking your car in a lot or outside your home, park in a well-lit area. Installing motion sensors, exterior home lights or parking under streetlights may deter potential thieves from breaking in to your car. The more visible your car is, the less attractive it will be to break in to.
It is best to remove visible items from your vehicle, however, if that isn’t possible, hide your valuables and personal belongings from view. Leaving tablets, chargers, portable navigation systems, shopping bags, purses and briefcases visible from outside the vehicle can prove to be too tempting for potential thieves. Loose change and other seemingly unimportant items can sometimes provide just enough appeal to break into your vehicle.
Try to stash away your belongings in your trunk before you park and be aware of your surroundings in case someone is watching you. Even better, bring your belongings with you. If you have an SUV or a car with a large cargo space, consider installing a cover to keep your personal items out of view.
If possible, install an alarm. Sometimes the blinking light on your dashboard alone will prevent a thief from breaking into your vehicle. If the alarm is triggered, the sound likely will call attention to your vehicle and scare them off.
While there are no guarantees, we hope you will find these tips helpful to prevent a potential car break-in and keep your valuables safe from harm.
